Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta is going to get a new G+9 storied building to house new hostel rooms, service and substation facilities. The foundation stone was laid virtually by Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the presence of Shrikrishna G. Kulkarni, chairperson, board of governors, IIM Calcutta and Saibal Chattopadhyay, director-in-charge, IIM Calcutta, on January 31 from Shashri Bhawan, New Delhi.
The proposed hostel, service and substation building will be built on an area of 32556sqm consisting of 726 rooms with common washrooms, 200 rooms with attached washrooms with all modern amenities to secure GRIHA 5-star rating at a proposed cost of Rs 245.88 crore. Presently the institute functions from a lush green campus of 135 acres in Joka. The work has been designed by architect Hafeez Contractor through the Central Public Works Department and it is envisaged to be completed within two years.
In an official press release, the institute has stated: “Thus there is an urgent need to upgrade the infrastructure so that IIM Calcutta can retain its competitive edge on the national as also global stage. Hence infrastructure norms like carbon zero, ability to efficiently support and use digital technologies etc. are now essential requirements. In view of the above, the Institute now needs to urgently build new/additional hostel and academic blocks to fulfil its vision and mission, while simultaneously replacing the old hostels.”
A bhumi puja was also held at the campus in the presence of students and faculty.
