Ruma Ghosh, 32, a resident of Rajdanga in Kasba, had gone to the residence of her former employer Narayani Malakar, 57, on Monday evening, apparently with the request that she be taken back, Malakar has told the police.

“According to Malakar’s statement, she did not hire Ghosh back. After sometime she went to the terrace and found her hanging from a wooden structure. She informed the neighbours and then the police,” said an officer of Garfa police station.

Ghosh was taken to SSKM Hospital, where she was declared dead. Ghosh’s body underwent post-mortem on Tuesday whose preliminary report suggested suicide, the police said.

As the news of her death spread in the neighbourhood, around 120-130 persons rushed to the building where Malakar lives and ransacked a private car that was parked, the police said.

Several flower pots that were kept on the staircase and the terrace where Ghosh had hanged herself, were damaged.

The police have started a suo motu case against unknown persons under sections of rioting, mischief and common intention for damaging the private property inside and outside the building.

Ghosh’s husband, Surojit, has accused Malakar of killing his wife. According to Surojit, his wife had taken a loan from Malakar and when she failed to return it, Malakar allegedly killed her.
