A woman raised the alarm while she was about to board an autorickshaw at Girish Park in north Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon when a man who she said had been stalking her allegedly molested her.
A traffic sergeant immediately responded to her cries for help and the accused was arrested.
Police said Pintu Pramanik, the accused, had been charged with a similar offence earlier.
A preliminary investigation revealed the suspect had been harassing the woman for several days, the police said.
The woman told the police that she had protested on a few occasions asking the accused not to stalk her but he allegedly refused to mend his ways.
On Tuesday, the woman told the police, she realised that Pintu had been following her since she left home. She reached the intersection of Girish Park and Vivekananda Road around 12.30pm.
Just as she was to board an auto at the crossing, Pintu allegedly lunged at her.
“The woman was very agitated. She said she had asked the accused several times not to stalk her but he ignored her pleas,” said traffic sergeant Kaushik Chakrabarty, who rushed to the woman’s rescue.
The woman later lodged a complaint with Girish Park police station.
“A case of molestation has been drawn up against the accused,” an officer of the police station said.
