A man in his mid-30s who had allegedly escaped with gold jewellery of a woman from Baguiati after her ‘pre-wedding photo shoot’ has been arrested in Chinsurah in Hooghly, around 55km northwest of Kolkata.

The woman’s aunt had accompanied her to the photo shoot, which was held on Friday in Polba, around 15km from Chinsurah.

The next day the woman, a resident of Deshbandhu Nagar in Baguiati in northeast Kolkata, alleged that the photographer had escaped with two gold chains that she wore for the shoot and some other jewellery.

On Sunday, the police arrested Krishna Ghosh from a second-floor apartment near Ram Mandir More in Chinsurah. Ghosh, originally from Siliguri in north Bengal, has been living in a rented accommodation in Chinsurah for three years.

He was produced in Chinsurah court and remanded in police custody for seven days.

“The accused used to advertise for photo shoots on his social media account claiming to be a professional photographer. He had also started a travel agency in Chinsurah but his main source of income appears to be from photo shoots,” said an officer of Chinsurah police station.

“After his arrest, we have received complaints from two other women alleging that he had escaped with their ornaments after the shoot.”

The Baguiati woman came to know about Ghosh from his account on social media and she decided to hire him.

Ghosh had allegedly set two conditions: the shoot would be held in Chinsurah and the woman had to bring some of her ornaments for her make-up.

After going through his book of accounts, the police have learnt that Ghosh had recently deposited some gold ornaments in a financial institution and collected some money. It is still not clear from where he had sourced these ornaments, the police said.

“While checking Ghosh's background, we learnt that he had opened a travel agency in Siliguri. The agency ran into trouble and he decided to move to Chinsurah,” the officer said.
