CBI case against businessman, cops

The matter pertained to the arrest of a lawyer from Jharkhand, Rajiv Kumar, who had to come to Kolkata in July last year and was allegedly caught taking a bribe

The CBI has started a case against a city businessman and “unknown officials” of Kolkata police following a directive from Jharkhand High Court to conduct an inquiry.

“Inquiry has revealed that prima facie there are offences under sections of the IPC, Prevention of Corruption Act and other acts. So, a case was registered,” a CBI officer said on Thursday.

The matter pertained to the arrest of a lawyer from Jharkhand, Rajiv Kumar, whohad to come to Kolkata in July last year and was allegedly caught taking a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to get a PIL against a Kolkata businessman in Jharkhand High Court dismissed.

CBI sources said they started a case against the businessman based on the allegation that he had lured the lawyer to Kolkata with the bribe offer. The PIL filed by Kumar says the businessman and others were involved in laundering allegedly unaccounted-for wealth of the Jharkhand chief minister.
