A civic volunteer of Kolkata police was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly posing as a police officer and using police stickers on his vehicle.

Police said the vehicle — a Tata Sumo — was spotted when it hit a cycle-van and a private car before crashing into the boundary wall of a temple on NSC Bose Road, near Bansdroni, around 7.45am.

“The cycle-van puller was injured. The car left the spot but the Tata Sumo was intercepted. Initially, we all thought it was a police vehicle,” said an officer.

On inquiry, it was found that the car belonged to a person who was a civic volunteer. The police recruit civic volunteers on contract to assist the force.

Dipak Sharma, 26, the driver of the Tata Sumo, was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving. Later, a separate case was registered against the vehicle’s owner, Debasish Bhattacharjee, 37, for masquerading as a cop and unauthorised use of police stickers. Bhattacharjee, a resident of Naskarpara Road in Bansdroni, was arrested.
