38-year-old driver of a private car run over by ‘speeding’ bus 

The probe of the case was handed over to the fatal squad of the traffic police (FSTP) of Kolkata police

A 38-year-old driver of a private car was run over by a bus that was allegedly racing with another bus belonging to the same route on Wednesday morning, police said.

Suman Sarkar, 38, a resident of Ranaghat in Nadia, had parked his employer’s car at Alipore’s Command Hospital, where his employer had gone for treatment, and was walking towards a tea stall when he was run over by the speeding private bus on Judges Court Road around 8.20am.

“A bus of route number 18B/1, hit the pedestrian while trying to overtake another
bus of the same route,” said an officer of Alipore police station.

Sarkar received multiple injuries and was taken to SSKM Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

The probe of the case was handed over to the fatal squad of the traffic police (FSTP) of Kolkata police.

Officers of the FSTP said Sarkar was engaged as the driver of a retired army official who had gone to the Command Hospital for treatment.

“Sarkar left his employer at the hospital and parked his car there. He walked out of the hospital and was heading for a tea stall near Mominpur when he was hit by a bus,” said an officer of the FSTP.

The police seized the bus and arrested the driver.

A case under sections of causing death due to negligence, rash and negligent driving and mischief has been registered against the bus driver.

The majority of the people who die in road accidents in Calcutta are pedestrians.
