Calcutta-based Byloom, known for its extensive range of India’s handloom and handicrafts products, is all set to organise the fifth edition of “Spinning Yarns” wherein craft and loom experts will take the audience through a series of talks and exhibitions on textile traditions and contemporary interventions from July 21 to July 24, 2023.
Keya Sarkar, founder of Alcha, will engage the audience in an insightful conversation on the growth story of the iconic brand. This Santiniketan-based brand takes pride in pioneering khesh, besides spotlighting kantha and other Bengal handloom traditions in contemporary styles.
An exhibition will follow the conversation. The new designs from the house of Alcha that will be up for grabs include handbags (kantha, batik), shopping bags (kantha, batik) wallets, batuas, scarves (kantha, batik and tie-dye), Kota batik, tie-dye sarees, Bhagalpur kantha saris, Khesh print saris, Silk kantha saris, Chanderis, mangalgiri kantha saris, kantha dupattas, tablemats and napkins. The displayed items will speak volumes about the label’s finest batik, kantha, khesh and tie-dye.
“The Spinning Yarns series has been showcasing different textile and handicraft stalwarts and their products for almost a year. Keya Sarkar, with her wealth of experience in working with traditional crafts of Bengal, has always been an inspiration for stores like Byloom,” said Malavika Banerjee, partner, Byloom.
“Keya’s experiments with Khesh, leather batiks, the so-called ‘batik look of Santiniketan’, the mix of materials, and using kantha stitch as an accent and making utility items was path-breaking when she started out. She had done it, keeping contemporary styles and tastes in mind. It’s a privilege for Byloom to host her talk and Alcha products,” said Bappaditya Biswas, designer-cum-partner, Byloom.
