What’s a Jamai Sasthi celebration without pet pujo? And when it comes to relishing authentic Bengali cuisine, Oh!Calcutta is one of the most popular restaurants in Kolkata. The eatery has recently launched its Jamai Sasthi menu — as a buffet avaiavle at the restaurant and in special meal boxes — and the mouth-watering offerings will have you planning your June 12 festivities around Oh! Calcutta. Here’s why...

A Bengali feast to relish

A glimpse of the menu — a mix of savoury and sweet items on offer

From start to finish, the Jamai Sasthi buffet menu at Oh! Calcutta offers the finest Bengali delicacies — preserving traditional culinary heritage while adding innovative twists.

Alluring starters

Oh! The fish fry! The marination, the thick fillet, the crunchy outer layer and ‘kasundi’ on the side — everything about this fish fry is a big thumbs up

The starter spread has Papri Chaat and Dahi Vada along with Anarosher Salad. The list further includes crunchy delights, like Gobindobhog-er Fish Fry, Roshun Bhapa Murgi, Aam Ada Paneer Roast and Enchorer Chop.

My Kolkata recommends: Although all the items on the starter list are lip-smacking, the Gobindobhog-er Fish Fry, Roshun Bhapa Murgi and Aam Ada Paneer Roast deserve special mention.

Main course companions

(L to R) Piping hot ‘luchi’and Kaju Kismis Pulao — the main course essentials on the list

The sight of gorom gorom phulko luchi, Kaju Kismis Pulao and steamed rice will leave you eager to explore the main course and find the perfect pairings for luchi and bhaat.

Main course items on offer

(L to R) Til Lonkar Torkari and Rajbarir Chhanar Kofta — while one is a medium spice gravy, the second is a rich-in-flavour paneer recipe

For the vegetarian options, start with chholar dal with the luchi. And to pair with rice and pulao, there’s Til Lonkar Torkari, Rajbarir Chhanar Kofta, Bhuna Aloor Dom (Dum).

(L to R) The Pabda Tomato Jhal and the Kosha Mangsho will make you take a second helping for sure

The fishy affair includes Pabda Tomato Jhal, Shorshe Narkol Chingri and Doi Katla. Then, there’s Dak Bungalow Murgi and Kosha Mangsho for the meat lovers.

Shorshe Narkol Chingri — the hint of mustard and green chilli, the sweetness of coconut and the taste of prawns make this dish a must try

My Kolkata recommends: You have to try everything because the taste is simply superb. However, if you must choose, don’t miss Til Lonkar Torkari, Rajbarir Channar Kofta, Shorshe Narkol Chingri, Doi Katla and Kosha Mangsho.

Accompaniments

Is a Bengali meal even complete without achaar, chutney and papad?

Crunchy Bori Bhaja, Kancha Aamer Chutney, Papaya Chutney, roasted and fried papads, fryums, and the summer soother doi and sosha are perfect accompaniments. The aam and lonkar achaar add a tangy twist, making the luchi and dal experience even more delightful.

My Kolkata recommends: A spoonful of Kancha Aamer Chutney and papaya chutney cannot be too much, right?

Desserts for the soul

(L to R) The soft ‘malpuas’ and Kheer Kodom make for the perfect ending to this culinary experience

Traditional sweet dishes like Malpua, Mishti Doi and Kheer Kodom, along with freshly cut mangoes, bring the sumptuous meal to a sweet end. And the vanilla ice cream just makes the last bite a wholesome experience.

Jamai Sasthi without aam, no way!

My Kolkata recommends: You simply can’t miss out on the Malpua, Mishti Doi or the paka aam.

Knick knacks that add to the charm

The buffet spread on offer

Oh! Calcutta is not just known for its food but also its aesthetics. From the warm lights and elegant chandeliers to the Kolkata-themed plates, arched window installations and photographs of Satyajit Ray — every detail adds to the ambience, making the dining experience even more pleasant.

Chef speak

Chef Kingshuk Kundu showcases the Jamai Sasthi meal box at Oh! Calcutta’s Forum Mall outlet in Kolkata

Chef Kingshuk Kundu, who has whipped up the gastronomical adventure with his team, shared, “The stress is on the ingredients — the freshness and the quality. Since it’s a Bengali fare, it is fish-heavy. That apart, Kosha Mangsho and chicken are also on the menu.”

When asked about the special Til Lonkar Torkari, the chef said, “There’s always a challenge while making a vegetarian dish. While there are traditional items on the menu, something new also has to be curated. The dish is made with green chilli paste and white sesame seeds, and is a mixed vegetable item.”

According to chef Kundu, Kosha Mangsho, Fish Fry, Doi Katla, Pabda and Til Lankar Torkari are some of the items that one must try on the Jamai Sasthi buffet menu.
