Alipore Museum and the cultural organisation Chhayanat (Kolkata) paid homage to Kazi Nazrul Islam on his 125th birth anniversary at the Alipore Museum auditorium recently

The cultural programme started with a keynote address by the director of Alipore Museum, Jayanta Sengupta. Sengupta also offered garland to a portrait of the revolutionary poet, marking the official inauguration of the event

Sahitya Akademi awardee author Binod Ghoshal, who has written the book ‘Ke Bajaye Banshi’ on Kazi Nazrul Islam, spoke on the topic ‘Karagare Nazrul’ — touching on the life of the revolutionary poet, moments from his jail tenure and his relationship with Rabindranath Tagore

Members of the cultural group Chhayanat (Kolkata) started the evening on a melodious note with Nazrulgeeti (songs by Nazrul Islam)

They sang popular songs like ‘Karar Oi Louho Kopat’ and ‘Durgam Giri Kantar Moru’

The team of Chhayanat also recited poetry of Kazi Nazrul Islam like ‘Samyabadi’, ‘Hindu Musalman’, ‘Gaahi Samyer Gaan’, ‘Nari’, among others. ‘Rajbandir Jabanbandi’ was also recited, and ‘Samyabadi Kabita Grantha’ was mentioned in the event, discussing the poet’s contribution

Young members of the team showcased their talent in a skit titled ‘Chotoder Nazrul’. Directed by Taniya Chatterjee of Chhayanat (Kolkata), the children recited ‘shrutinatak’ ‘Khuki o Kathbirali’ and ‘Lichu Chor’. Their emotive expressions and synchronised presentation won the hearts of the audience
