Parents and teachers of Indus Valley World School pay tribute to Tagore and Ghalib

On September 4, the eve of Teachers’ Day, parents of students and teachers of Indus Valley World School organised a soulful musical evening, ‘Safar-e- Zeest’, celebrating the life and great contributions of Rabindranath Tagore and Mirza Ghalib

The group of 30 teachers and 25 parents paid tribute to the two legendary poets through poetry, dance and music. “Safar-e-Zeest is a special Teachers’ Day programme. But you may wonder why parents are in a Teachers’ Day programme? We at Indus Valley School, believe that parents and teachers are partners in the education of a child. To us it is just not a cliche when we say that parents are a child’s first teacher. So our Teachers’ Day programme is a collaborative initiative. Most of the performers are not trained singers or dancers. They have practised for days to put this up,” said Amita Prasad, director of Indus Valley World School, Kolkata

The evening witnessed some spell-binding rendition of Rabindrasangeet and ghazals. Sonali Ghosh, a trained singer and mother to Ditipriya Ghosh of Class VI, presented ‘Dil e naadan tujhe hua kya hai’, a ghazal originally written and composed by Mirza Ghalib. Ghosh said: “My daughter joined Indus Valley World School last year, and since then the school has given me a new life too. I am grateful for the school for providing this platform to parents like me. It was truly an enriching programme today and I am glad I was a part of it”

The choir of parents and teachers left the audience enthralled. Rabindrasangeet like ‘Gahana Kusum Kunja Majhe’, ‘Sajani Sajani’, ‘Amaro Porano Jaha Chai’ and more filled up the auditorium with touching melodies

The elegant troop of dancers presented Rabindra Nritya and other classical dance forms

The dance and song performances were interspersed with poetry and shayari recitation on several important events of Tagore and Ghalib’s life

The evening was a well-coordinated effort of the school teachers and parents. Guardians, well-wishers and staff were present to enjoy an evening of music and soulful performances
