Kolkata witnessed a special event on August 3, at Ibis Kolkata in Rajarhat, where the WICCI Arts Council, West Bengal, celebrated India’s artisans ahead of National Handloom Day

The event, titled ‘Dharohar: A Heartfelt Tribute to the Artisans’, was attended by people from all walks of life, many of whom walked the ramp in traditional Indian attire. There were also panel discussions, highlighting many facets of the handloom sector

Andrew Fleming, the Deputy High Commissioner at British Consulate, walked the ramp in a turquoise south-cotton kurta with Hakoba work
Australian Consul-General in Kolkata Hugh Boylan also attended the event. He joined Fleming in a panel discussion on the sustainability and improvement of the handloom sector. Boylan wore a south-cotton kurta as well, adorned with handwoven patterns and embellishments, and walked the ramp
Reena Dewan, the former state president of the West Bengal Arts Leadership Council, dazzled in a black outfit, complete with an elegant long Baluchari jacket
Dr Rupali Basu, director and CEO of Woodlands Hospital, also graced the programme with her dignified presence. She wore a gorgeous zari Kota doria handwoven sari
Santi Das, additional superintendent of police, West Bengal Human Rights Commission, looked fabulous in gamchha-printed kurta and dhoti set
