A businessman was found dead holding a chopper in his right hand in front of his house in Bansdroni’s Milan Park early on Tuesday morning, police said.

The police said preliminary investigation had revealed that Shaw had been murdered and left to bleed in front of his own home.

An officer said the chopper in his right hand suggested that either it had been placed in his hand after his death to divert police investigation or the man had grabbed the chopper and made a futile attempt to save himself.

Blood stains were found inside Shaw’s house suggesting that he was attacked when he was still inside the house.

Shaw lived in Milan Park with his family and his younger brother, Sanjay, and his family in the same house. His family had gone to their hometown at Bhagalpur in Bihar for Chhath and were yet to return.

The police said Sanjay and his family were home when the incident happened. “Manoj, his brother and the latter’s family had gone to attend a marriage ceremony on Monday and returned very late. According to Sanjay’s statement they had retired in their own rooms after which he did not hear anything unusual,” an officer said quoting Sanjay.

Neighbours spotted Shaw’s limp body in a pool of blood and informed the police.

A neighbour said he did not hear any unusual sound or screaming at night. “None of us could recall having heard anything last night,” he said.

An investigator said Shaw’s relatives had been examined about the persons Shaw spoke to at the marriage party or if he had any enmity with anyone.

“We are also examining employees of the deceased,” said an officer of Bansdroni police station.

The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Senior officers from Lalbazar visited the scene of crime.
