Steel city veteran handball mentor named coach of the national men's handball squad for Asian Meet in Iran

The Handball Federation of India (HFI) has appointed veteran handball mentor Hassan Imam Mallick as the coach of the Indian senior men's team for the 8th Asian Beach Handball Championship to be held in Tehran, Iran from March 22 to 28.

Jamshedpur-based Mallick, a senior sports administrator at Tata Steel sports division and member of the technical committee of HFI, is the chief coach of handball training center run by Tata Steel at JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur.

It is not for the first time Mallick is accompanying the national men's squad as a coach. He was the coach-cum-manager of silver medal-winning Indian squad during an international meet held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2018.

"I am happy and thank the HFI for apppointing me as coach of the national outfit. I would try my best to guide the Indian side," said Mallick, who is mentor of Jharkhand men's handball team,

A seasoned coach, Mallick is credited with guiding young handballers of the Tata cradle in getting employment in armed forces and other central government establishments. The training center has also produced international handballers.There are at present 60, including 17 girls, honing their skills at the training centre under Mallick.

"I think there is lot of scope for handball in Jharkhand. We can produce handballers some of whom can represent the country in international competitions," added Mallick who has been bestowed with Uttar Pradesh Khel Samman and Police Khel Samman (Jharkhand).

He has also been handed over College Blue Award by Jamshedpur-based Karim City College in 1985. Mallick is instrumental in channeliizing sports activities in East Singhbhum district.
