Disqualification proceedings against suspended Jharkhand Congress MLAs deferred

The legislators seek eight weeks' time to respond to the notice issued by the speaker

The three suspended Congress MLAs on Wednesday have asked for eight weeks to respond to a disqualification notice that was issued by by the Speaker of the Jharkhand Assembly, according to indiatoday.in.

The Congress party had sought the disqualification of Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kachhap and Naman Bixal Kongari — following allegations that "they approached other party legislators with offers to switch sides and topple the government."

The MLAs sought more time as they are barred from leaving Calcutta, as per their bail conditions.

Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato sought their clarification on the complaint against them.

The MLAs were arrested by West Bengal Police in Howrah with Rs 50 lakh on July 30. But they were granted interim bail even as the West Bengal Police were investigating the matter.
