Migrants top positive list in Jharkhand

Workers who returned to their homes account for around 84% of the positive cases

The returning migrant workers top the list of coronavirus patients in Jharkhand, according to official figures.

According to the state government, 2,089 people out of 1.22 lakh tested so far have been found to be Covid-19 positive till 9pm on Sunday. The migrant workers who returned to their homes in Jharkhand accounted for around 84 per cent of the positive cases. There were 1,699 migrant workers among the 2,089 who tested positive for Covid-19.

There are 672 active cases in the state, while 1,406 have recovered and 11 have died.

While the mortality rate in the state was 0.52 per cent, around 6.5 times lower than the national rate of 3.36, recovery rate was also much better — 67.30 per cent compared to 52.80 per cent nationally.

Even the seven-day growth rate was 2.90 per cent compared to the national figure of 3.59 and the doubling rate was projected to be 24.22 days compared to the national rate of 19.65 days.

“We compare the current figures everyday to those of the same day of the previous week to arrive at these rates,” Nitin Madan Kulkarni, principal secretary in the health department, told The Telegraph.

“Hardly two per cent of the positive cases required hospitalisation,” he replied when asked how many of the positive cases needed intensive care, adding the rest were all asymptomatic.

While 38,805 people were put in quarantine centres, 3.06 lakh were under home quarantine in the state till Sunday.

With 312 of the 317 positive cases detected till Sunday, Simdega district has the maximum number of migrant workers who tested positive for Covid-19.

East Singhbhum district had the second highest number with 237 of the 322 positive patients being migrant workers, followed by Koderma and Hazaribagh districts.

While 155 of the 159 positive cases were migrant workers in Koderma district, the number in Hazaribagh was 153 of the 167 positive cases.

In Dhanbad, 106 of the 115 positive cases were migrant workers while their number was 90 out of the 97 in Garhwa till Sunday.
