The committee announced by Pawar to select the new party chief is expected to meet on Friday. While it is being said that Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar has always been happy handling Maharashtra and is uninterested in national politics, the reality is that he has spoiled his chances by demonstrating his pro-BJP inclinations.

Party workers passionately requested Pawar to reconsider his decision when he met them on Thursday. But the veteran explained to them why the party needed a new face to lead it into the future.

Pawar, 82, is struggling with serious health issues. Ajit is a shrewd politician and has greater command over party workers in Maharashtra, compared with Sule. But his politics is not in tune with that of his uncle, who doesn’t want to abandon the secular camp.

Sources say that Pawar is determined to protect his secular credentials till the end, and genuinely believes that Narendra Modi’s politics is not good for Indian democracy. Sule, too, is staunchly secular and unsuited to any role in the BJP.
