A Banaras Hindu University (BHU) faculty member on Tuesday alleged misappropriation of funds and irregularities in appointments and promotions in the university and has approached police for an FIR against vice-chancellor Sudhir Jain.

Professor Om Shankar, a former cardiology department head of BHU, has alleged before the Varanasi police commissioner that the university has carried out building reconstructions and illegally appointed close associates of the VC as advisers. Shankar also alleged irregularities in the purchase of medical equipment. He said the university paid an additional 1 crore to a vendor. Shankar alleged corruption in the treatment of poor people at the Sir Sundar Lal Hospital in BHU. The hospital is exploiting poor patients by submitting bloated bills under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, he said.
