The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday accepted Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s request for permission to the Congress to run 1,000 buses to take stranded migrants home.

Awanish Awasthi, additional chief secretary, department of home, said on Monday he had sent the approval letter to the Congress general secretary.

“Your proposal is accepted. Kindly provide immediately the list of 1000 buses, the names of drivers/conductors and other details,” the letter said.

Priyanka had made the request on Saturday and the party had lined up 500 buses at the state’s border on Sunday. But the buses had to return because permission did not come. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath asked Priyanka not to “do politics” and to focus on Congress-ruled states, adding that his government was running buses.

On Monday, Priyanka thanked the government for granting the permission. “It is our moral responsibility and right to save the lives of people in the time of epidemic, protect poor and restore their dignity,” she tweeted.

“The Congress is doing its job in its full capacity with dedication,” read the tweet in Hindi.

Priyanka’s personal secretary in the evening shared with the media a copy of her reply to Awasthi. “Hope you will allow (us) to ply the buses from tomorrow (May 19),” the letter said. A list of buses and other details was attached.
