The Congress has welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of a total countrywide lockdown but said the decision came late and without putting in place effective systems to look after the most vulnerable sections of society.
It also pointed out that the Prime Minister in his Tuesday evening address did not dwell on facilities for the medical fraternity and care of patients.
Congress spokesperson P. Chidambaram tweeted: “The lockdown is late, but better late than never. Those who mocked the idea of a lockdown will do the country a great favour by remaining silent for 21 days.”
Chidambaram, the most vocal advocate of a total lockdown, said: “The PM’s announcement left a gaping hole. Who is going to provide cash to the poor that they need for the next 21 days? Why does it take four days and more to work out the promised financial package? We have enough talent to finalise the package in four hours.”
Modi has announced a central allocation of Rs 15,000 crore to strengthen the health infrastructure.
Questioning the meagre amount, Chidambaram said: “What is the meaning of Rs 15,000 crore announced by Prime Minister? Let me repeat — Government needs to find Rs 5 lakh crore over the next 4-6 months to manage the economic consequences. The right thing to do is for every citizen to support the lockdown whatever may be the hardships.”
He added: “I am certain the PM understands the urgency of announcing a financial package and putting cash in the pockets of the poor, daily workers, agricultural workers, self-employed etc. Once the package is announced, there are other pressing sectoral problems that have to be addressed. For example, how are the farmers going to harvest their crop beginning April 1?”
Party communications chief Randeep Surjewala said: “Modiji, the country will abide by the lockdown order but what have you done to fight the corona pandemic? How will the health professionals be protected? What is the solution for the livelihood crisis triggered by the coronavirus for the millions of poor?”
