The Indian Navy has given assurances to the government that it will become 'Atmanirbhar' (self-reliant) by 2047, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar said on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference ahead of Navy Day, he also said the Navy keeps a strong vigil over the movements of various Chinese military and research vessels in the Indian Ocean Region.

The case for the proposed procurement of a fleet of Predator drones from the US is under process, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar also said.

At least three people were killed and several others injured in a blast near the venue of senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee's rally in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in Block 2 of Arjunnagar in Bhupatinagar area, 1.5 km from Contai town where TMC national general secretary Banerjee's public meeting venue, a police officer said.

Indian-American Pichai was awarded the Padma Bhushan for 2022 in the Trade and Industry category. The Madurai-born Pichai was named one of the 17 awardees earlier this year.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday held a prayer meet with the leaders of different religions to pay tributes to the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy on its 38th anniversary, where he said the "mistake and carelessness" of Union Carbide company caused an "unforgettable" disaster that claimed human lives on a large scale.

He also called for the need to maintain a balance between development and environment.Toxic gas leaking from Union Carbide's pesticide factory killed thousands in Bhopal on the chilly and dreadful night of December 2-3, 1984.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday paid tributes to India's first president Rajendra Prasad and lauded him as a legendary leader who epitomised courage and scholarly zeal.

Born in 1884 in Bihar, Prasad was a leading freedom fighter and close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He is the only president to serve two full terms.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi resumed in Agar Malwa district of Madhya Pradesh on the 11th day of its passage through the state on Saturday.

After a night halt, the foot march began from the bus stop in Mahudiya village in Agar Malwa around 6 am.This is the 87th day of the yatra since it started from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7.

A fire broke out at a flat in a 22-storey building in suburban Malad here on Saturday, but there was no report of injury to anyone, a civic official said.

The blaze erupted in the flat located on the third floor of Marina Enclave building in Jankalyan Nagar in Malad around 11 am.

India's number one shuttler Lakshya Sen, his family and former national coach Vimal Kumar were charged with cheating and age fraud in an FIR filed in Bengaluru.

The FIR, filed on Thursday by M Goviappa Nagaraja, alleged that the 21-year-old reigning Commonwealth Games champion, along with his brother Chirag Sen, had fudged their age to get into playing age-group tournaments since 2010.

Senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the ODI series against Bangladesh, starting Sunday, due to a right shoulder injury and replaced by Umran Malik in India's squad, the BCCI announced on Saturday.

It has been learnt that Shami had suffered the injury during a training session after he returned from Australia, where the Indian team made a semifinal exit from the T20 World Cup.
