Suriya’s dreaded gangster is reformed by love and decides to shun violence in the teaser of his 44th film Retro, dropped by the makers on Tuesday.

The two-minute-16-second-long teaser begins with a shot of Suriya sitting with his love interest, played by Pooja Hegde, on the banks of a ghat in Varanasi. While Pooja ties a bracelet around his wrist, Suriya gazes into her eyes and says that he will stop working with his father and will quit “violence, rowdyism, and hooliganism”.

“Will try to smile and be happy. The purpose of my birth, in your language, my Dhammam, is love. Pure love. That's it. Now, tell me, should we get married?” he tells Pooja, who kisses his forehead and nods.

The scene is interspersed with flashbacks from his criminal life where he followed in the footsteps of his father. He punches a wall out of anger, beats up goons, smokes cigarettes and drinks alcohol. Other menacing characters, played by Joju George, Jayaram, Prakash Raj and Nasser, also feature in the teaser.

Previously, Suriya’s wife Jyotika had shared a teaser revealing his gangster look from the upcoming film. The one-minute-37-second-long teaser kicks off with a shot of an ocean with the words “somewhere in the sea” flashing across the screen. Next, we see a gang of goons standing on either side of a building named Royal Estate. “A war…awaits for…the one,” reads the tagline of the teaser.

Suriya makes his entry with a blood-stained face and takes a gun from one of the goons, with an intense score playing in the background. The teaser ends with Suriya facing the camera and firing a shot from his gun.

Retro is directed by Karthik Subbaraj, who is known for directing films like Jigarthanda, the Rajinikanth-starrer Petta and Vijay Sethupathi’s Pizza. The upcoming film, in line with Subbaraj’s previous works, reportedly explores environmental conservation.

Suriya is also set to collaborate with filmmaker RJ Balaji for an upcoming film, tentatively titled Suriya 45. The film, which will feature music by A.R. Rahman, is reportedly going to be an action-thriller flick set in a village.

Suriya was last seen in Kanguva, directed by Siva, which features the actor in six different roles. The movie hit theatres in 10 languages including Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Tamil on November 14.
