Singer-activist Joan Baez appeared unfazed in her response to Chaka Khan’s opinion that she “cannot sing” as the 82-year-old folk legend cited their different musical styles as the basis of the latter’s remark about her career.

Speaking to People, Baez coolly admitted that her ‘floaty voice’ may not be to Khan’s likings. “It's not her style, and so it is perfectly legitimate,” said the singer who has influenced generations through her music.

In an interview with Los Angeles Magazine earlier this year, Khan had given her opinion about certain artists on the Rolling Stones magazine’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time list. “Let’s be honest, the bitch cannot sing. Now, she was a good writer,” she said while talking about Baez.

After the explosive interview, Khan took to Instagram to offer clarity to fans and apologised for her comments. “Recently, I was asked about a list of the 'greatest singers of all time' and instead of questioning the need for such a list, I was pitted against other artists and I took the bait. As artists, we are unfairly put into ‘boxes’, ‘categories’ or on ‘lists.’ Being an artist or musician is not a competition. It’s a gift, for which I am truly grateful,” she also wrote.

Baez, however, did not appear much perturbed about Khan’s take on her musical talent in the aftermath of the incident.

Recently, Joan Baez: I Am a Noise — a documentary on Baez’s life, including her much-talked-about relationship with singer Bob Dylan during the 1960s — has been made by Karen O'Connor, Miri Navasky and Maeve O'Boyle. It had a limited release on October 6.
