A political face-off between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, days ahead of the seventh and final phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, will keep Calcutta on the edge on Tuesday as the two rivals lead their parties in campaign in and around the city.

While Modi will address two public meetings and then lead a roadshow in north Calcutta, the chief minister will lead two padayatras and address a public meeting during the day.

Starting his day’s campaign in Jharkhand’s Dumka, Modi’s next stop is North 24-Parganas Ashoknagar, a part of the Barasat Lok Sabha constituency, to campaign for the BJP nominee Swapan Mazumdar. The meeting is scheduled to start at 2.30 pm.

Mamata will be in the neighbouring constituency of Dum Dum, where the Trinamul’s Saugata Roy is in the fray, for a padayatra from Birati to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Jessore Road scheduled to start at 3 pm.

By the time Mamata’s first padayatra is over, Modi is likely to head for Baruipur (South 24-Parganas), where he will address a public meeting for the BJP’s Jadavpur candidate Anirban Ganguly at 4 pm.

As Modi speaks at Baruipur, Mamata will head to Entally in central Calcutta to lead a march for the Trinamul candidates Sudip Bandyopadhyay (Calcutta North) and Mala Roy (Calcutta South). The padyatra will start at 5pm from Entally Market and end at Ballygunge Phari.

The most awaited event of the day is Modi’s road show from Shyambazar’s Five-Point Crossing to Swami Vivekananda’s residence in north Calcutta’s Simla street.

At 5.55 pm, the PM is scheduled to offer floral tributes at the statue of Subhas Chandra Bose following which the wheels will roll for the road show from Shyambazar Five-Point crossing. It will move down Bidhan Sarani, crossing Hatibagan and end at the junction of Vivekananda Road and Bidhan Sarani. PM Modi will also visit Swami Vivekananda’s residence to pay his tributes around 7 pm.

From 6 pm onwards, Mamata will be at Behala Chowrasta to address a public meeting for the Calcutta South candidate Mala Roy.
