The West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE) announced that the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for primary school recruitment will not be held this year, citing ongoing legal complications and delays in appointing previously qualified candidates as reasons for the postponement. This update, shared by WBBPE President Gautam Pal, comes after TET exams were held consecutively in 2022 and 2023.
Originally, the 2024 TET was scheduled for December, following the annual pattern established. The goal had been to hold the TET annually, and while the exams were conducted for two consecutive years, recruitment of the candidates who passed in 2022 and 2023 had not yet started due to legal issues.
The 2022 TET marked a significant event as it was held after a five-year gap, with approximately 7 lakh candidates appearing, of whom 1.5 lakh passed. The following year, the TET took place on December 24, 2023, with 3.09 lakh registrations and 2.72 lakh candidates attending. However, the results of the 2023 TET have yet to be announced, despite nearly a year having passed.
The delay in conducting TET exams is expected to increase the number of candidates with a DElEd (Diploma in Elementary Education) seeking employment. However, WBBPE assures that the next TET exam will be conducted within six months, providing hopeful candidates another opportunity for recruitment.
