In a bid to bring down death counts in the country owing to sudden cardiac arrests, the University Grants Commission has urged the Higher Educational Institutes of the Country to provide Basic Life Support (BLS) training to students, faculty and staff at the institutes.
The training will be provided to the students, faculty and staff at the institutes in consultation with trained doctors.
It its letter to the Higher Educational Institutes of the country, UGC mentioned a study which revealed that among one crore deaths in the country every year, neary 10 lakh people succumb to sudden cardiac arrest.
The letter also mentioned that nearly 3.5 lakh lives can saved if bystanders perform chest compressions within this time frame. However, only 0.1 percent peope are aware of the Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques which can be administered to save the life a person suffering from cardiac arrest.
The UGC mentioned that teaching the BLS techniques to the people associated with the education sector can help in reducing the number of deaths due to sudden cardiac arrests across the country.
