The Faculty Cricket Club at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur is organising a hard-ball T20 cricket tournament in the memory of D Yadav, a professor who retired from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the institute.

The tournament started at the ACES Cricket Ground at IIT Kanpur on February 26.

A total of 18 T20 matches will be played under the tournament from February 26 to April 17. The first match of the tournament was played at the ACES ground between Faculty Cricket Club and Staff A teams. Staff A made 184 runs in 20 overs, and Faculty Cricket Club lost the match by 60 odd runs. Notable performance of the day was from Kamal Kant from Staff A who also won the man-of-the-match title.

D Yadav was one of the faculty members who taught and conducted his research at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Kanpur. He is remembered for his passion for cricket. The memorial cricket tournament was instituted in his name in 2018.However, the tournament could not be conducted since 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yadav was one of the first members of the Faculty Cricket Club (FCC) at IIT Kanpur and he continued to play in the FCC matches till the age of 70 years. He was popular for his wily spin bowling besides his superb fielding and batting.

The tournament was inaugurated on February 26 by Abhay Karandikar, director, IIT Kanpur, and the deputy director of IIT Kanpur, S Ganesh.

“Organising such a cricket tournament will help bring the institute back to normal life after a long and hard ongoing battle with COVID-19 in the last 2 years,” said Karandikar.

He also encouraged the organisers to involve young faculty members and staff in various sports activities at the institute because such interpersonal interaction amongst various sections of faculty, staff and campus community members increases the morale of everyone and aids physical and mental wellbeing.

The Faculty Cricket club also felicitated some of its veteran past players such as Harish Karnick and Neeraj Mishra and also veteran staff-members such as Rajendra Kanoujia, K S Vajpayee, S C Gond and others.

The organising team of the tournament includes Kaustubh Kulkarni, president of organising committee, vice-president Ark Verma, organising secretary Amit Dohare, organising joint secretary Sunil and treasurer of the tournament Rakesh Kanoujia.
