The Residential Coaching Academy (RCA) of Jamia Millia Islamia continued to shine in the UPSC civil services examination with 23 candidates cracking the test.
Altogether 933 candidates have passed the exam whose results were announced by the Union Public Service Commission on Tuesday. Of the 11.35 lakh candidates who had applied for the test, 5.74 lakh sat for the preliminary exam. While 13,000 qualified for the Mains exam, 2,500 qualified for the interview.
Ishita Kishore, an alumna of Shri Ram College of Commerce under Delhi University, topped the exam.
Kishore tweeted: “I don’t know what exactly worked for me but personally what I tried to do was work on my Mains examinations by practising, looking at previous year’s question papers, making notes from newspapers and revising them. I think all of them together helped me clear the exams.”
She mentioned that she wants to serve the country by joining the IAS.
From the RCA at Jamia, 120 students had appeared for the Mains examination and 23 qualified. They include 12 female students. Ajmera Sanketh Kumar has ranked 35th. Last year, 22 students had cracked the exam, including all-India topper Shruti Sharma.
Prof. Abid Haleem, who is in charge of the RCA, said the academy provides free coaching to the students selected through the national entrance test. The entrance for the fresh batch is scheduled to be held on June 17 and aspirants can apply till June 5.
“The plus point in the RCA is the diversity. Candidates from different religious groups and different regions get coaching. They learn from each other too,” Haleem said.
Haleem said the students get a safe and secure environment on the Jamia campus. There is multifaceted support, starting from resource persons to hostels. The coaching is free but the students have to pay for hostel accommodation and food. The RCA takes about 100 civil service aspirants every year and coaches them.
A news channel had held a discussion titled UPSC Jihad in 2020 after the success of around 50 Muslim candidates in the exam.
Of the 933 candidates qualifying in the test, 345 belonged to the general category, 263 were from Other Backward Classes, 154 from the Scheduled Caste, 99 from the Economically Weaker Sections and 72 from the Scheduled Tribes.
The successful candidates have been recommended to the IAS, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and central services of Group A and Group B. The number of vacancies reported by the government to be filled includes 473 Group A services, 200 IPS, 180 IAS, 131 Groups B and 38 IFS.
