BTech and Diploma students of mining and mechanical branches at Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) University, Jharkhand got to learn about the nitty-gritty of mining from professional miners and engineers during an industrial visit to the underground and open cast mines of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) recently.
Accompanied by ICFAI University faculty, the students went to the Churi Underground Mine of NK area and Ashoka Open Cast Mines of Piparwar area, both in Jharkhand. The observed the various aspects of mining and machinery during their visit.
Mithilesh Mishra, head of the Mining Engineering Department; Rajesh Prasad, head of the Mechanical Engineering department, and ICFAI faculty members Manohar Kumar Singh and Suman Badal guided the students during the visit
At the Churi Underground Mine, the project officer, through a presentation, explained the workings of various underground mining equipment and shared the safety precautions to be taken during the visit underground. Under supervision, all the students were taken into the underground mining area where they gained first-hand knowledge of continuous miner, battery hauler and feeder breaker. With an explanation from the site engineer, the students also gained an understanding of the method of winning coal by mass production technology
After visiting the underground mine, the students visited the Ashoka Open Cast Mines. They were briefed about the operations at an opencast mine. They witnessed the functioning of the surface miner, Haulpack and Shovel.
Visits to both the sites taught the students about the different modes of coal winning and the advantages and disadvantages of the modes. They also learnt about the types of mining machinery used in the field.
After finishing the underground visit, the students proceeded to the Ashoka Opencast mine of Piparwar Area, wherein the students were briefed regarding opencast operations. Thereafter the students watched the working of the surface miner, Haulpack and Shovel etc. During the visit, the students could understand the different modes of coal winning and their advantages and disadvantages and also how various types of mining machinery are used.
