Kevin Preji, 19, from Bangalore had been preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) while in Plus II when he realised one day that he wanted to be a lawyer. He worked hard every day and finally cracked the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) with All India Ranking (AIR) 19.
Edugraph spoke to Kevin to know about his journey of cracking CLAT and the road ahead.
How was CLAT this time and how are you feeling after acquiring AIR 19?
I felt this year’s exam was relatively easier compared to the previous two years. I was pleasantly surprised to get an AIR of 19. I had looked at a few rank predictors, which almost made me lose hope that I might miss the cut-off. However, when I saw the results, I was delighted.
When did you get interested in law and why?
I had always been interested in studying Law. Talking to some experts helped me develop deeper knowledge and understanding of the world. At school, I participated in debates and extempore and that helped me further. Last year, in January, while I was preparing for JEE, I thought about what I wanted to do in future and what was my calling. The more I thought about it, the more I realised that being a lawyer is what I wanted to be.
What do you want to do after completing your LLB?
Ever since I was a kid, I always admired ambassadors and bureaucrats from various countries. I am keen to pursue International Law and then continue with higher studies or I will begin my career as a lawyer and practise locally.
What kind of law do you want to practise and why?
International Law has been on my mind for a while. I have always found it fascinating how sovereign, independent countries follow rules and conventions. Being a part of the system that helps sovereign countries cooperate and connect is truly inspiring. Corporate law is another area of interest. Promoting businesses, helping firms expand their operations, engaging with other partners for optimum results for the firm and such initiatives have also always intrigued me.
How did you prepare for CLAT?
For each subject, I followed a specific method of preparation. For instance, for English, I read newspaper editorials every day for two hours. It helped me build my reading speed and focus, which is crucial to cracking CLAT. Understanding tones and figures of speech is also very important; for which I referred to online sources. I also read passages from books on different topics to strengthen my concepts in science, finance, geopolitical issues etc. For general knowledge, I referred to various editorials in leading newspapers. The GMAT critical reasoning book helped me understand core concepts for Logical Reasoning. On the other hand, for Legal Reasoning, I referred to various online lectures.
One of the most helpful resources for me was the high-quality study material provided by Unacademy. I also regularly took sectional tests and mock exams conducted on the platform and tried to solve several previous years’ papers.
What are your hobbies?
I like to watch animated movies and spend time playing badminton and basketball with my friends. I really enjoy reading and keeping small notes of everything I read as it helps me collect ideas which I can implement in future.
