Through an insightful conversation with Rahul Dasgupta, Director and Trustee of Globsyn Business School; one of Eastern India’s premier business schools, The Telegraph Online Edugraph explored how this prestigious institution is integrating the advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and particularly, generative AI, into its management curriculum and preparing students for the future.

Seated across from Rahul Dasgupta at the elegant Oberoi Grand, I posed a question that’s on everyone’s mind: “Can you explain why Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly important in management education?” Dasgupta’s response was both insightful and inspiring.

“AI is not just another technological advancement; it represents a fundamental shift in how businesses operate and how decisions are made,” he began, his voice carrying the weight of his experience. “As every application becomes AI-driven, it is imperative for management students to be aware of the technologies driving this change. Understanding the fundamentals of Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Transformers – particularly the transformative technologies like those powering platforms such as ChatGPT – is crucial. These are the tools that will enable our students to effectively navigate their careers in an AI-dominated industry,” he emphasised.

The Ethical Dimension of AI: A Critical Conversation

As our conversation shifted to the role of ethical AI in transforming management education, Dasgupta elaborated, “At a macro level, the life cycle of a Large Language Model (LLM) involves three distinct stages: input, process, and output. For educational institutions, it is crucial to understand which LLMs would give faculty and students higher levels of accuracy based on the prompts provided, the extent of their use, and the specific tasks they are applied to. These considerations are essential to prevent biased outputs.” He emphasised, “An ethical AI framework not only helps in building trust in AI applications but also ensures that their impact on society is positive, equitable, and sustainable.”

Generative AI: Embracing Opportunities and Facing Challenges

The next question delved into the significance of generative AI – “Why is it important for the younger generation and educational institutions to embrace generative AI?”

Dasgupta’s answer reflected a balanced view of this transformative technology. “The younger generation and educational institutions must embrace generative AI, as it represents the future of innovation and learning,” he responded, his enthusiasm palpable. “For students, generative AI offers the opportunity to create new content, ideas, and even business models. It fosters innovation, accelerates learning, and enhances critical thinking abilities.” However, he was quick to address the challenges – such as biases and data privacy concerns – underscoring the need for robust ethical frameworks to mitigate these risks.

Prompt Engineering: The Art of Precision

Intrigued by the technical aspects, I inquired about prompt engineering and its role in mitigating biases in generative AI. Dasgupta’s eyes lit up as he explained, “Prompt engineering is the art of giving specific instructions to an LLM to generate the desired outcomes: the input, the process, and the output. As I have already mentioned before, a well-crafted prompt also helps eliminate certain biases from the pre-trained LLMs. Given that many LLMs today still operate with some level of bias, achieving high accuracy in outputs relies heavily on the quality of the prompts provided. Therefore, it is vital for both students and faculty to possess a deep understanding of how to craft effective prompts to harness the full potential of AI tools,” he emphasised.

Enhancing Content and Ensuring Integrity

As we explored the practical applications of generative AI, I asked how students and faculty can use these tools to enhance and personalise content while avoiding issues like plagiarism. Dasgupta’s response was a blend of encouragement and caution.

Dasgupta said, “It helps from a student 's perspective on tutoring, as it provides them personalised learning assistance, research and information retrieval, creative writing abilities, and allowing them to generate new business ideas or business models. It also helps faculty to plan lessons and create content, automate grading and feedback, and enhance communication.” Additionally he cautioned, “Generative AI tools offer incredible potential for enhancing and personalising content, but they must be used responsibly.” His guidance on citing sources, avoiding copy-pasting, adding original analysis, and establishing strong institutional frameworks provided a roadmap for ethical and effective use of AI tools.

Globsyn's Unique Approach: Integrating Ethical AI and Human Values

Our conversation reached its crescendo when discussing how Globsyn Business School integrates ethical AI and human values into its management curriculum. I asked Dasgupta how this approach benefits students. His response was both compelling and heartfelt. “Respect, compassion, trust, empathy, and acknowledgment are the fundamental human values and the cornerstones of Globsyn Business School’s educational philosophy,” he declared.

Dasgupta described how the Sukamal Dasgupta Universal Human Values Center (UHVC) embodies Globsyn’s vision of nurturing leaders who are not only technologically adept but also grounded in universal human values. “We prepare our students not only to succeed in the business world but also to become ethical, compassionate leaders,” he said with conviction.
