Undergraduate admissions began in government and government-aided colleges across Bengal on Monday through one centralised online portal.
A candidate has to apply online through https:banglaruchchashiksha.wb.gov.in and
https://wbsche.wb.gov.in by clicking the “Centralized Admission” tab. They are supposed to get a User ID and password, enabling them to register and apply.
Many candidates on Monday said they could not register on Day I as they did not get the User ID and one-time password despite several attempts.
Candidates can register and apply till July 7.
An official of the state education department said the portal was facilitating admissions in 461 colleges affiliated with 16 universities for 7,217 undergraduate courses.
“There could be some teething trouble in the initial stages and we are keeping a close watch,” the official said.
The department has engaged 3,561 Bangla Sahayata Kendras (BSK) to help candidates register and apply.
Krishnendu Das, who lives near Srimani Market in North Calcutta, said he visited a helpdesk to log into the admission portal.
“Despite several attempts, I could not register. Although I logged into the designated websites, I did not get any User ID and password. I will try again on Tuesday,” said Das.
Jeet Ghosh, who passed the school-leaving examinations from Metropolitan Institution (Main), said: “The admissions started later this year because of the launch of the centralised portal. However, I
could not register on the first day because I did not get the User ID and the OTP. Many
of my friends faced the same experience.”
Until last year, each college enrolled students by itself.
Autonomous and minority institutions that are outside the ambit of the centralised system have almost finished screening applications they started receiving from the first week of May. They will start classes in the next few weeks.
A cybercafé owner who runs the facility in a lane adjoining Asutosh College in South Calcutta said “many candidates” had to return without applying because of the glitches.
Education secretary Manish Jain said the application and registration went without any trouble.
“Till 7.10pm on Monday, as many as 71,790 students registered. The number will surge by night. Some of the candidates had trouble registering early in the day. They did not get the password as their email accounts were not active for some reason,” Jain told Metro.
An official of the department said they took up the issue with Google so that the glitches did not recur. “The application process will be on till July 7. We hope the glitches will be sorted soon,” he said.
Jain said they tagged the details of the 3,561 Bangla Sahayata Kendras (BSK) with the portal from June 19 so the seat aspirants got an idea of the Kendras closest to them.
“We even gave the GPS address of the kendras where the candidates could register free of cost,” he added.
The applicants were allowed to visit the portal from June 19 so they could familiarise themselves with the
procedure.
Asutosh College principal Manas Kabi said: “Of the 30 subjects, three — English, microbiology (self-financed) and phsychology (self-financed) — received 255, 144 and 138
applications, respectively. These are decent figures. Other subjects, too, received good response.”
Lady Brabourne College received 388 applications till 4.30pm. “English received the maximum applications,” principal Shiuli Sarkar said.
A system-generated merit list will be published on July 8.
