How to land a job with the IMF I study in Class XI. How do I join organisations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)? What are the skills and education necessary to help me to achieve this goal?

Getting into international organisations like the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund requires a combination of education, experience and a strong skill set. First, you will need to obtain a relevant academic degree. International organisations often look for candidates with advanced degrees in economics, finance, public policy, international relations or development studies. Consider pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in one of these areas to become an attractive candidate.

Work experience in the areas of finance, economics, development, public policy or international affairs can also be invaluable. Working in government agencies, research institutions, think tanks, or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with an international focus can also be beneficial. It is useful to be conversant in a foreign language like French, Spanish, Arabic or Chinese. Remember, you have to do a lot of reading too as you must keep up with global issues, economic trends and policy debates.

Once you feel you have the requisite skills, you can start applying for positions. In fact, it may be a good idea to keep an eye out even before that. Regularly monitor the websites and career portals of international organisations like the World Bank and the IMF. These organisations often advertise job vacancies, internships and fellowship programmes on their websites. Remember that competition for these positions can be intense. Securing a job may take time and persistence, so be prepared to prepare for and pursue an alternate path before you can transition to a desired international organisation.

Say bye to chemistry Do I need to take chemistry in Class XI if I want to do engineering? I plan to pursue BTech in computer science. If I cannot make it for some reason, my backup option is to do BSc in computer science. I would much rather not take chemistry in Plus Two.

According to the most recent educational regulations, it is no longer mandatory to take chemistry in Class XI if you want to to pursue engineering. However, physics and mathematics are still compulsory subjects. The JoSAA (Join Seat Allocation Authority) Eligibility Criteria 2023 states very clearly that a student “must have passed Class XII (or equivalent) examination with physics and mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the chemistry/ biotechnology/ biology/ technical vocational subjects.”

As far as a bachelor of science degree in computer science is concerned, quite a few educational institutions do not require applicants to have studied chemistry to be eligible for the programme. Some such institutions are Ashoka University in Sonipat in Haryana, KREA University in Sri City in Andhra Pradesh, FLAME University near Pune in Maharashtra, GITAM University in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. All of these are privately-owned universities so the fees may be on the higher side. Certain colleges under the government-owned Delhi University also do not require students to have taken chemistry in Class XI to be eligible for the undergraduate programme in computer science.
