The Xavier Law School of St Xavier's University, Kolkata, recently organised a special lecture titled 'Challenges to the judicial independence in contemporary India' at the university campus. Hon'ble Justice Indra Prasanna Mukherjee, Judge, High Court of Calcutta was present on the occasion as the chief guest.
The lecture provided a comprehensive overview of the judiciary’s role and the responsibilities of judges. It underscored the importance of a balanced and impartial approach, the safeguards in place, and the imperative for judges to lead lives of integrity, free from corruption and undue influence.

The lecture discussed the significant role played by the judiciary in interpreting laws and administering justice. The pivotal responsibility of judges in upholding justice as an essential organ of the government was discussed in the lecture.
Justice Mukherjee highlighted the importance of safeguards that insulate judges from external pressure. It was highlighted that should not compromise the integrity of judges. He also expressed that judges should live like hermits, free from the influence of corruption.
Judges were advised to maintain a distance from social interactions, refrain from expecting personal benefits for themselves or their families, and uphold the highest standards of moral conduct.
