Born into a musically inclined family, it is little surprise that Shraddha Oraon started singing when she was just three. The 14-year-old is now a trained singer and her forte is folk music.

The Class X student of Techno India Group Public School, Falakata, is one of the winners of the Edugraph 18 Under 18 Awards. She also performed at the grand finale of the awards ceremony at GD Birla Sabhagar on March 22.

Evenings in the Oraon household are all about music. Shraddha grew up listening to her parents singing and jamming, and she would join them too. “I started training in Rabindrasangeet and folk music since my childhood. My mother is a singer and my father is also a musician. Even my younger brother is a singer,” said Shraddha.

The late Bollywood playback singer, Lata Mangeshkar, is her guiding light. “My mother is a huge fan of Lata Mangeshkar. I have been listening to her songs since I was a child. She’s a truly an inspiration for all singers,” said Shraddha.

Love for folk music

While her friends listened to rock and pop music, Shraddha fell in love with folk music at a young age. “Folk music keeps me rooted. It has a homely vibe. You can feel the purity of folk music. It is simple, yet so mesmerising,” said Shraddha who sings Bhawaiya and Rajbanshi Kirtan. She is also a part of a folk music band, Upasana Music Group.

Shraddha often shares her songs on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. “Social media is a great platform since many people are able to listen to my songs. I try to be consistent with my posts. The responses are very motivating. It helps boost my confidence but then I have to know the limit. I can’t get addicted or carried away by social media,” she said.

Balancing academics and music

With Class X board exams knocking on the door, studies are Shraddha’s first priority right now. “Music is a big part of my life. No matter what I do, where I go, music will be there. So, I don’t have to neglect my studies because of my singing. I am doing both and maintaining enough balance. I think both are important to me but studies are my first priority as a student.”

The young singer dreams of participating in a music reality show. She has auditioned for a few already but is yet to get her big break. “My first goal in life is to spread positivity and happiness in people’s life through my singing. The next goal would be to be known as a folk singer,” Shraddha said.
