Students of Techno India Group craft 11.5 feet high Durga Idol from recycled materials

Techno India Group, the largest private education group in Eastern India, unveiled a Maa Durga idol made out of recycled materials, created by students of Techno India Group Public schools, Techno India colleges and Techno India university, West Bengal on 28 September, 2022. The idol has been installed at the Techno India Main Campus in Salt Lake, Kolkata. The event aims to spread awareness towards celebrating festivals with minimum wastage and more sustainable approach.

Fifteen students from the Group’s schools, colleges and university, along with 2 Art teachers volunteered to craft the innovatively grand idol of the Goddess using only recycled materials like Fevicol Drum, Colour Drum, Sanitising Drum, Chemical Drum, Cosmetic Bottles, Cold Drinks Bottles, Plastic bowls, PVC Pipes, Flexible Pipes, Electric casing and various types of Nuts, Bolts, Screws, lGue, GI Wire and GI L Angle. The entire process took them about a month to complete.

“We, at Techno India always nurture the creative abilities of the students across our schools, colleges and university. With UNESCO attributing Durga Pujo as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this year the fervour has gone up a lot higher. The excitement and frenzy are visible everywhere. To add further joy to the festive spirit with a dash of creativity by our students, we decided to come up with an idol of Maa Durga made from recycled materials. People can visit our campus to see this unique work of art,” said Prof Manoshi Roy Chowdhury, Co-Chairperson, Techno India Group.

Rahel Ghosh, student of class- XI, TIGPS, Garia says “I am proud of our school's initiative of preparing a sustainable Durga idol and overwhelmed to be a part of the pot painting programme. We have learnt how we can make a Durga Idol with various products.This is really beneficial amidst the scenario of today's modern world.”

“I had a wonderful experience working with the team for making such a beautiful Durga Idol. We have gathered materials and we learnt the art of placing it to create an idol. It was a fascinating experience to draw and colour on them. We got to learn a lot of technical things about drawing. So this was very special for us... I would like to thank the organisers of the event for providing us with this wonderful opportunity.” said Pramit Sahoo, Student VIII-A, Techno India Group Public School Ariadaha

Soumili Nag, IT, 2^nd year Techno India Main Campus, ”We had a wonderful and amazing experience. Got to learn too many new things such as how to use spray paints and many more. We helped in making the protima with the help of waste materials and overall enjoyed a lot and had a great time”.

“I had a really good time making the protima with my fellow mates. The best part about this was that we made something useful out of waste materials.” said Uddipta Kar, CSE-AIML, 2^nd Year, Techno India Main Campus.

The programme started with the welcome note by Prof Manoshi Roy Chowdhury, Co-Chairperson, Techno India Group. It was followed by the unveiling of the idol of Goddess Durga by Smt Bratati Bandhopadhyay. The crescendo of Dhaaks reverberated in the atmosphere to complement the invoking of the Goddess. There was a prize distribution ceremony for painting competition for the students of Techno India Group on the theme the vision of durga through the student’s eyes. There was a mini Dhunuchi Dance performance to celebrate the occasion.
