Students of Classes V to XII can test their cultural heritage quotient by signing up for The Heritage Olympiad to be hosted by Cultre, a cultural entrepreneurship consultancy start-up incubated by IIT Kanpur, on November 14.
The virtual competition aims to introduce students to India’s heritage and culture and make them aware of the vast treasure trove of knowledge within the country.
“The Heritage Olympiad aims to strengthen heritage education and all things related to Indian heritage. It focuses on three main aspects — tangible, intangible, and natural heritage. The Heritage Olympiad has been conceived to integrate heritage education in schools and make it more accessible to a younger audience,” said Anjchita B. Nair, co-founder and chief operating officer, Cultre.
The hour-long exam will be held in English and Hindi and will include multiple choice-questions on traditions, built spaces, performing arts, visual and material arts, literature and languages, people and personalities, histories, natural environment, institutions, cultural practices and rituals. From historical monuments such as Qutub Minar to natural heritage sites such as Dal Lake or the beautiful patua paintings of West Bengal, the Olympiad will cover a wide range of subjects.
Participants will be divided into three categories — Classes V to VII, Classes VIII to X and Classes XI and XII.
Several preparatory sample question banks are available online to help students prepare for the event.
In keeping with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, The Heritage Olympiad strives to provide interdisciplinary education, a collaboration between culture and education. The questions have been framed by experts keeping in mind the syllabus of national and international educational boards.
“Aligned to the National Educational Policy 2020, we collaborate with experts in the cultural and education sector. We aim to provide an interdisciplinary approach to arts and cultural education with a focus on people, process, material and technology. Our curriculum has been designed by professionals in a way that is broadly aligned with the syllabus followed by the major national and international boards,” Nair said.
“The Olympiad also integrates concepts of global citizenship and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); environment and sustainability and protection of traditional knowledge, heritage sites and historic cities. We try to spark an interest in learning about the country and acquiring general knowledge skills. Adhering to a liberal pedagogy of out-of-classroom and out-of-syllabus learning, the Olympiad will help students acquire a holistic approach to education and gathering of knowledge breaking the current status quo,” Nair said.
