Recently, the Department of Optometry and Vision Science of NSHM Institute of Health Science in Kolkata organised the Vision Science Conference 2024. This distinguished conference attracted 200 delegates from diverse specialties within the vision care sector, marking a significant platform for fostering knowledge exchange and scientific innovation.

The conference began with an inspiring keynote address by Dr Soumendra Nath Bandyopadhyay, Principal of NIHS Kolkata. His speech set an enthusiastic tone for the event, followed by Ajay Mishra, Vice President of GKB Optics, who as Chief Guest delivered a motivating address that emphasised the importance of ongoing education in vision care.

Several industry leaders delivered their presentations at the conference. This included Rupam Sinha, Myopia Management Lead at ZEISS Vision Care India, Prof Monica Chaudhry, Director of MCVI Clinic, Gurugram and Dr Rajeev Prasad, President of the Asia Pacific Council of Optometry.

Rupam Sinha's presentation, ‘Myopia - The Pandemic Nature,’ enlightened the audience on the widespread impact of myopia globally and it was met with acclaim by attendees.

His quote resonated deeply with participants: "The goal of this session is to equip you with the knowledge and confidence to step out of this room and guide someone towards a healthier, better visual world." This powerful statement encapsulated the session's essence and inspired attendees to apply their newly acquired insights.

Prof Chaudhry addressed ‘Advanced Myopia Management’, providing an in-depth analysis of the latest technologies like specialised contact lenses and orthokeratology treatments aimed at slowing myopia progression in children.

Dr Prasad on the other hand discussed ‘Neuroplasticity of Vision’, highlighting innovative therapies such as perceptual learning and vision training that support recovery from visual impairments by strengthening neural pathways.

A standout feature was a workshop on visual rehabilitation using scleral RGP lenses hosted by mentor Gagan Sahni. This captivating session explored cutting-edge techniques and underscored the benefits these lenses offer in enhancing visual outcomes.

Buoyed by this year's success, there is already heightened anticipation for the Vision Science Conference 2025, which promises to build on this momentum and drive further advances in vision care and scientific collaboration.
