BITM, nestled in the heart of Kolkata, stands as India’s pioneering science museum. Under the aegis of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), it tirelessly promotes scientific curiosity among youth. Here, curious minds engage with interactive models spanning physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, electricity, and electronics. It also bridges the gap to real-world issues—climate change, renewable energy, and cutting-edge technologies find a voice within its walls. This workshop perfectly exemplified BITM's mission.

Over the three days, students delved into various activities that brought their textbooks to life:

  • Dissecting the Secrets of Flowers: Using Zoom stereo microscopes, the students embarked on a fascinating voyage, dissecting and studying the intricate details of flowers. Who knew a simple flower held such wonders!
  • Microscopic Marvels: The workshop wasn't just about the big picture. Students learned how to prepare microbial culture media and isolate microorganisms from the very air they breathe.
  • A Colorful Revelation: After isolating bacteria, the young scientists put their detective skills to the test by performing simple staining techniques. This unveiled the vibrant colors and unique characteristics of these tiny organisms.
  • The Chemistry of Life: The workshop delved into the building blocks of life itself – carbohydrates and proteins. Through engaging tests, the students learned to identify these essential molecules.
  • Pigment Power: From the vibrant greens of leaves to the dazzling colors of flowers, students explored the world of pigments by extracting chlorophyll and observing its fascinating properties.

Sreenu Appikonda, one of the mentors who conducted the workshop, shared his insights: “The camp consisted of a variety of activities - observation and culturing of the bacteria to dissection observation of the floral pots.” His enthusiasm mirrored that of the students, as he added, “Students expressed a lot of interest and enthusiasm to do these experiments and when we see this kind of enthusiasm from the students we also get motivated and we also provide much input for the students.”

The “Discovering Life” workshop at BITM was more than a lesson—it was a journey into the heart of existence. As young minds dissected flowers and marveled at microbes, they discovered that science isn’t confined to textbooks; it’s alive, vibrant, and oh-so-fun! Sreenu Appikonda emphasized this point: “The very objective of this workshop is to enhance students' practical skills as well as to encourage them to gain learning experiences by doing. So we look forward to having students come forward to learn by doing these experiments and improve their practical skills.”
