The Department of Sociology at Jadavpur University proudly hosted Lifeworld, a two-day academic conclave, under the banner of Jadavpur University Sociology Consortium. This interdisciplinary event brought together scholars, experts, and students to critically examine the intricate relationships between spaces, senses, and the Idea of India. Held on September 19-20 at the university’s main campus, Lifeworld provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and intellectual exchange.

The conclave commenced with an enlightening Opening Ceremony, setting the tone for the discussions. Suchismita Das moderated the Dialogue Deck panel discussion, featuring Dr Anindita Ghoshal, Prof Om Prakash Mishra, and Abhishake De Sarkar, who shared insights on spatial encroachment in India. Parallel sessions included ‘Perspectives’ paper presentations and ‘Turn the Table’ debates, fostering a rich exchange of ideas among participants. Notably, the panel discussion sparked critical reflections on the intersection of space, power, and identity.

The screening of 'A Bid for Bengal,’ accompanied by a discussion with director Kasturi Basu, was a highlight of the first day. This thought-provoking session encouraged attendees to think critically about the complex relationships between space, culture, and identity. The evening concluded with a captivating performance by Jadavpur University Gorkha Parivar, showcasing India’s cultural diversity.

The second day began with Teach for India’s insightful seminar on education’s role in shaping social spaces. This was followed by ‘Aesthetics’ creative submissions and ‘Perspectives’ paper presentations, providing a platform for innovative expressions and scholarly research. Dr Antara Ray moderated the Dialogue Deck panel discussion, featuring Prof Epsita Halder, Dr Kanad Sinha, Dr Manas Ghosh, and Dr Gorky Chakraborty, who offered diverse lenses to examine spaces.

The conclave concluded with a mesmerizing performance by Jadavpur University Dance Forum, a heartfelt closing performance by the students of the Department of Sociology, and Convenor’s vote of thanks. The closing performance did not close the ceremony but instead opened us more! Lifeworld successfully created a platform for participants to share their lived experiences within Indian society, fostering critical thinking and promoting innovative scholarship.
