The second edition of NAAD- a festival of dance and music, an initiative of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kolkata Kendra in association with Shankar Ghosh Tabla Foundation and curated by maestro Bickram Ghosh was organised in Kolkata from 24 to 26 March, 2023. It was inaugurated on Friday, 24 March 2023 at G.D Birla Sabhaghar. The festival continued for 3 consecutive days with an array of stalwarts from the realm of music, dance and percussion.
After the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Director, BVB, Kolkata Kendra Dr. G.V Subramanian, Pt Bickram Ghosh and Deputy Director, BVB, Kolkata Kendra , Mrs Sujata Ghosh, the cultural programme commenced with a mesmerising dance drama, “Andal” by Vidushi Jaya Seal Ghosh and her troupe. This was followed by a mellifluous presentation of Jugalbandi by Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt on the Mohan Veena and Shri Jyotirmoy Roychowdhury on the tabla.
On the second day, the venue was packed with an audience who were willing enough to let themselves soak in the magic of music. The opening performance by the trio - Pt. Kumar Bose- the tabla maestro, Shri Arunava Mukherjee, the former’s student and Shri Hiranmoy Mitra on the harmonium enthralled the audience completely. The audience’s heartfelt appreciation filled the auditorium. The second performance of the evening had the curator of the programme himself, the tabla maestro Pt. Bickram Ghosh along with the Sarode player Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, Pt. Kumaresh Rajagopalan on the violin and Pt. S. Sekhar on the Mridangam. For roughly two hours, the quartet conjured up a magical and musical ambience that left the audience in awe.

On 26 March, the first performance of the evening was Balmiki Pratibha, a dance drama composed by Guru Rabindranath Tagore and presented before us by Vidushi Alokananda Ray in association with the West Bengal Correctional Services. Through her programme of Social reform through Dance Therapy she trained male and female inmates of the Presidency Correctional Home, Alipore and imparted a sense of self worth in them. It was the 97th performance of ‘Balmiki Pratibha’ in Kolkata and all over India – as stated by Vidushi Alokananda Roy. The packed hall and the frequent rolls of applause were ample proof of the programme’s success. In the second performance of the evening, there were three musical greats, namely Pandit Ronu Majumdar on the flute, Pandit Debojyoti Bose on the sarod and Pandit Tanmay Bose on the tabla, performing a melodious ensemble compelling the overcrowded audience to give a standing ovation. ‘Naad’ has become a valuable addition to the cultural calendar of Kolkata.
