The word MOTHER, which evokes so many emotions, is about a relationship which is based on the spirit of selfless caring without expecting anything in return. The birth mother of Lord Krishna was Devaki, but it was Yashoda who raised him with unconditional love and hence, innumerable lyrics have been penned down about their beautiful relationship. So who is a mother? Undoubtedly, the one who nurtures with all earnestness and sincerity. Our planet Earth is also referred to as the mother Earth since she is the life giver. Similarly, within a classroom, every teacher is also a mother, for the relationship is based on trust, caring, growth and nurturing.

Our ancient scriptures speak about the Guru- Shishya relationship where the students had to stay with their teachers who were responsible for their learning, as well as growth and development. In today’s context, quite often the relationship is viewed as ine that has been commercialised, but one needs to speak to a teacher to understand it better. In Kindergarten, the teachers are called ‘mother teachers’ as they teach the little ones basic life-skills.

The role of a teacher is quite similar to that of a mother, of helping a child to learn and grow, intellectually, physically and emotionally. She helps the child to celebrate success and absorb failures and yet move on in life. As the families are growing nuclear in India, the role of a teacher is no longer limited to syllabus transactions, assessments and marks. Many times, it is the teacher who detects a conflict or emotional disturbance even before the parents realise it. It is a great honour for a teacher to be viewed as a mother.

In senior classes, the conflict between the child and parents seem to be growing. The reasons could be many, ranging from use of mobile phones, frequent visiting of social networking sites, acceptance issues with friends or discord between the parents leading to loneliness, poor self-esteem or depression. Teachers are increasingly becoming confidantes for their students, more so after the pandemic. Like a mother, a teacher is also responsible for helping a student imbibe good values in life.

A smile or appreciation from a teacher motivates students on the path of growth. Like a mother, a teacher is patient and concerned about her students. The bond they share is quite sacred. They say, a mother is a teacher but a teacher is also a second mother.
