The lives and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Sister Nivedita help our minds ward off disturbing thoughts and help us remain unaffected by the turbulence outside, Pravrajika Vedarupaprana, principal of Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Vivekananda Vidyabhavan, said on Sunday.
She was speaking at a function on the occasion of 125 years of a girls’ school at 16 Bosepara Lane in Bagbazar, which later came to be known as Sister Nivedita Girls’ School. It is run by Ramakrishna Sarada Mission.
“Our minds do get influenced by the thoughts of the outer world. Such thoughts, including ones that make us feel jealous, playful and selfish, need to be kept outside,” Pravrajika Vedarupaprana said addressing students and teachers at Phanibhushan Bidya Binod Jatra Mancha in Bagbazar.
“We need to install a screening machine, like a metal detector, in our minds so that only those thoughts that keep us happy and calm can permeate. How can we do that? By following the lives and teachings of some of our role models, including Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Sister Nivedita,” the pravrajika said.
Senior nuns of Ramakrishna Sarada Mission said around 240 students of Classes VIII to XII from 40-odd schools in eight districts in Bengal had been handed copies of Sister Nivedita’s autobiography.
Later, a contest was held in which the students were asked to write on Sister Nivedita’s life.
The contest was organised by Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, in association with Paschim Banga Samagra Shiksha Mission of the state government.
“Based on their performance, 10 students from the schools were shortlisted. The top three were awarded scholarships and the rest were handed prizes and medals at the programme on Sunday,” said Pravrajika Nikhilprana, of Sister Nivedita Heritage Museum and Knowledge Centre.
The students and 17 teachers from these schools were taken on a tour to Belur Math, Mayer Bari and Sarada Math before they were brought to the venue.
“One of Sister Nivedita’s deepest chants revolved around India, the country which she equaled to mother. She will be happy when we make our nation proud through our deeds. Sister Nivedita has bestowed this responsibility on all of us to contribute to the nation’s glory,” said Pravrajika Atandraprana, assistant secretary of Sri Sarada Math and Ramakrishna Sarada Mission.
The students later participated in a quiz and various cultural programmes.
