In a recent notification, the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced that UNESCO is actively seeking qualified applicants for the key position of Chief of Section in Paris, France. Candidates interested in contributing to global water resource management and environmental sciences can apply through the official UNESCO careers website by October 28, 2024.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves designing strategic initiatives and policies for UNESCO's water resource management division. The selected candidate will oversee critical areas such as freshwater science, hydrogeology, and water resource planning. The Chief of Section will also coordinate with international partners, securing resources and setting agendas to meet UNESCO’s long-term goals, especially as outlined in its Medium-term Strategy (C/4), Programme and Budget (C/5), and the IHP-IX strategic plan.

Qualifications and Experience

UNESCO is seeking candidates with an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in freshwater sciences or environmental sciences with a specialization in hydrogeology or water resources. Additionally, the candidate should have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the field of water resource management, with at least five years in international contexts. Other desirable qualifications include:

  • Proven experience with water-related UN agencies, technical cooperation NGOs, or international organizations.
  • Expertise in groundwater management, urban water resource development, and sustainable human settlement planning.
  • Experience in staff management, budget oversight, and partnership mobilization.
  • Demonstrated skills in designing and managing large-scale programs at the national, regional, or international levels.

Applicants should have an excellent command of English, with proficiency in French highly preferred.

Application and Selection Process

Prospective candidates are required to complete an online application via the UNESCO careers portal. Once submitted, applications cannot be modified. UNESCO’s evaluation process considers the qualifications listed in the vacancy notice and may include assessments, competency-based interviews, and reference checks.
