In light of the impending cyclone ‘Dana’ brewing over the Bay of Bengal, the West Bengal government has announced the closure of schools and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centers across nine districts from today, i.e., October 23, to October 26. This precautionary measure aims to protect students, staff, and vulnerable populations from the anticipated severe weather conditions. The affected districts include North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, Hooghly, Howrah, and Kolkata.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the current low-pressure area will strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by October 23, with landfall expected between Odisha and West Bengal on October 24. Heavy rainfall is likely in both states for at least three days. In response, the West Bengal school education department took swift action to close all educational institutions from upper primary to higher secondary levels. The ICDS centers, catering to young children and pregnant women, will remain shut during this period.
Similar measures have been taken by the Odisha government, which has closed schools and colleges in 14 districts, including Ganjam, Puri, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khurda, Nayagargh, and Cuttack until October 25.
Parents and guardians are advised to stay in touch with school authorities for updates on closures, online classes, and any further instructions.
