The Odisha government has inducted a total of 6,131 newly-appointed secondary school teachers as part of its ongoing school transformation programme under the government’s flagship 5T initiative.
This is the first time that the Odisha government has inducted more than 6,000 government school teachers in one batch.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik welcomed the teachers at an orientation programme held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on December 16 and extended his best wishes to them.
"Education is the collective aspiration of the masses. Teachers are the soul of the education system and students are the symbol of infinite possibilities," said Patnaik.
Stating that teachers can play an important role in generating students’ interest in studies, Patnaik said that schools in the state are undergoing a major transformation under the 5T programme.
The 5T programme, a flagship campaign of the Odisha government, focuses on infrastructural development, smart classrooms, e-library, modern laboratories, improved sanitation and making playgrounds available for nurturing sporting talents.
The 5T programme stands for Team Work, Technology, Transparency, and Timely completion leading to Transformation.
Patnaik said that the contribution of teachers to the society is significant and special among services provided by different professionals.
"I welcome you (teachers) to adopt teaching as a profession," he said, urging the newly-appointed teachers to nurture creativity in students and help them discover their areas of interest.
As many as 1,075 schools in the state have been transformed so far in the first phase of the 5T programme, said the Odisha chief minister, adding that all government and government-aided high schools in the Eastern state will be developed in similar fashion in a phased manner.
The 6,131 teachers inducted on December 16 received their appointment letters in the past 47 days. As many as 2,236 of these newly-appointed teachers will teach Humanities, 1,779 Science, 829 Hindi, 796 Sanskrit and PET, while three teachers have been recruited to teach Telugu in schools.
The government had set a target to fill up 11,000 posts of teachers in the first phase of the 5T programme. However, only 7,000 applicants have cleared the eligibility exams conducted by the state’s school and mass education department.
