The academic council of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi has decided to conduct admissions through Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) from the academic year 2022-2023, the varsity said in a statement.
The decision was "overwhelmingly endorsed" by the members, read the statement issued by Jayant K Tripathi, the director of admissions at JNU.
During the meeting of the academic council on January 12, a large number of members including, the deans of schools, centre chairpersons and external members of the council emphasised that CUCET would provide a level playing field to numerous eligible students from across the country and reduce the burden on students of taking several entrance examinations.
The varsity has been conducting the JNU Entrance Examination at various centres across the country in collaboration with the National Testing Agency (NTA) since 2019.
The statement said that the university had earlier in its academic council meeting held in March last year decided that whenever the NTA would hold CUCET, the university would go by it.
CUCET is a common entrance test conducted by the NTA for admissions in all central universities across India. The latest National Education Policy recommends a common entrance test for admission in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in all the central varsities in the country.
However, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) and the JNU students' union have opposed the decision of the JNU academic council, claiming that the agenda of the meeting was sent to the members only two days prior to the meeting.
While the council said that a decision of adopting CUCET was already taken in its 157th meeting, the JNUTA has alleged that the minutes of the meeting had no record of such a decision.
As per JNUTA, not only did the vice-chancellor not place this letter on the table but he also did not allow people to raise apprehensions with respect to the adoption of CUCET. A total of 111 faculty members had submitted their written suggestion that the particular agenda regarding CUCET should be sent to the Board of Studies of Schools and the Faculty Committee for deliberations.
Earlier this week, the Delhi University also decided to conduct admissions for the next academic session through CUCET.
