Najma Akhtar, the vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, has been conferred with the Ambassadors for Peace award by Universal Peace Federation on the occasion of National Youth Day. National Youth Day was virtually celebrated on Swami Vivekananda's 159th birth anniversary on January 12.

“The future of the country and the world depends upon the youth. They must always be empowered with freedom but along with a sense of responsibility and the universities including JMI are fulfilling the same objective,” Akhtar said.

Akhtar is an alumni of Aligarh Muslim university and a PhD (Education) from Kurukshetra University. She served as a Controller of Examinations at AMU in the early 90s, which was also her first administrative post. She also worked as the Head of the Department of Educational Administration at NIEPA for 15 years before being appointed at Jamia as the first woman vice-chancellor.

Apart from the awards function, various national and international delegates delivered inspiring lectures about the life lessons from Swami Vivekananda during the programme attended by students of different schools, colleges and universities.

The Universal Peace Federation is a United Nations-recognised organisation that honours ‘Ambassadors for Peace’ to those individuals whose lives exemplify the ideal of living for the sake of others. It is given to those who dedicate themselves to practices that promote universal moral values, strong family life, interreligious cooperation, international harmony, renewal of the United Nations, a responsible public media, and establishment of culture of peace.

The Universal Peace Federation is an NGO in general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. It supports and promotes the work of the United Nations and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Sun Myung Moon and his wife, Hak Ja Han Moon, founded the Universal Peace Federation in 2005. Moon proposed a revitalised, renewed United Nations. More than 50,000 diplomats, clergy, civic leaders, current and former heads of state have been appointed as Ambassadors for Peace.

Among the programmes of the UPF are leadership conferences and regional peace initiatives. UPF promotes the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and encourages people to work for peace through serving their communities.
