Delhi University (DU) is looking to establish an Institute of Nanomedical Sciences (INMS) that would bring together researchers from Delhi’s medical schools and scholars from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan, US to facilitate research on cancer, sickle cell disease and diabetes among others.
The proposal to set up the institute will be brought up during DU’s Executive Council (EC) meeting on December 17.
An official document sent to the members of the EC stated that INMS will be involved in collaborating with scientists and public health experts to address medical challenges across the world.
The proposed institute will be mission driven and have researchers in medicine, computation, biology and chemistry from Delhi University, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Michigan and medical schools in the national capital working together to build and sustain international consortia to spread discovery in areas including cancer, sickle cell disease, diabetes and kidney research.
“INMS will empower a revolution in biomedicine to accelerate the pace at which the world conquers disease,” the document stressed.
Earlier, the proposal had come up during DU’s Academic Council meeting and had been passed despite opposition from some members.
The document added that members of the governing body of INMS will include the secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, the DRDO secretary, secretaries of the Union education ministry and the health and family welfare ministry among others. It will also include international experts from the field of nanomedicine.
The job of the governing body will be to constitute an international advisory board to guide INMS on matters of special research. Its members may comprise Nobel laureates and other leaders in their fields who are not connected with DU, said the document.
The body will also constitute a research advisory council for the institute that will help in collaborating research and getting funding for projects. The members may be associated with philanthropic organisations like Rockefeller Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Tata Foundation among others.
Its job will also include appointing visiting professors or fellows, adjunct professors or fellows, distinguished professors, honorary professors, professor emeritus and associated faculty subject to approval by the EC, the document stated.
“Persons working in national labs and industries, senior scientists and pioneers in their fields all over the world may be appointed as visiting faculty/fellows etc. Eminent experts in the field of nanomedicine and nanotechnology and allied fields can be appointed as distinguished professor and professor emeritus for life by the director/governing body,” it added.
