The CUET UG 2023 started from 21 May this year. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is administering the examination in three different shifts for granting admission to students in several central universities of the country. The CUET UG 2023 examination has been rated as simple to moderately challenging by the applicants who took the exam. The Telegraph Online Edugraph spoke to a few students who sat for the exam and these were their reactions.
“The subjects chosen by me were Economics, English and General Test. After giving the paper and before, I found the General Test was a bit difficult and requires more studying than Economics and English. General test had a few maths questions which I couldn’t solve properly. I believe Class 11 and 12 concepts are the base. If they are strong and well known you can solve questions. But definitely that’s not enough, we need to practise questions and sample papers as much as possible. Students appearing for CUET should be prepared with all kinds of questions and knowledge” added Kajal Gupta.
In contrast to the same, Vineet Kushwaha, Academic Heights Public School, Satna opines “There is no such need for tuition because NCERT of class 11th and 12th are enough. I was well thorough with NCERT concepts, and my teachers guided me well. With the support of my school, I didn’t find the need for tuition. As far as Economics and English are concerned NCERT books are enough. For the General Test exam, extra books, sample papers and Youtube knowledge is a great way to excel”.
“For this year’s CUET UG exam, I do not think that any kind of tuition was required. But yes, who knows how the next year’s or the next-to-next year’s exam could be. So, some sort of tuition or extra self-study always pays off” said Snehil Mishra
The syllabus for the CUET in the year 2023 was the same as the syllabus for Class 12. Unlike other top UG entrance exams, that at times includes studying beyond the Class 11 and Class 12's curriculum. However, this question till date stands debatable as some students opine that syllabus of class 11 and 12 is enough for sitting in the exams whereas some consider that it requires more focus beyond that syllabus.
“I choose English Language, Economics Domain and General Test. English and Eco was full of your understanding and clarity of concepts they did go well, But for general test I need to do little bit more hard work as I wasn’t able to solve numericals, so I need to work upon them and I need to be aware lot more what’s happening around me and the World. Furthermore, I also feel that class 11 and 12 syllabus is not enough to sit for CUET UG as they could only set a base for you. To strengthen your foundation you need to have an upgrade on each and every subject and beyond the subjects. Students need to study out of the box, Know what’s going on in the world in each and every dimension of society” added Khushi Rajak
CUET UG was majorly introduced so as to improve student's chances of being admitted to several Central Universities throughout India via a standardised, open, and fair admissions procedure to lessen the likelihood of prejudice and favouritism. However, ever since its initiation the entrance exam has been gaining mixed responses from students and their peers. While the initial stint of CUET UG faced many glitches and students being affected by this system, this year’s entrance exam seems to go on a smoother basis with more students accepting the system and being comfortable in understanding its norms. The Telegraph Online Edugraph also spoke to students about the entire CUET initiative and here’s what they shared.
“I think CUET is an alternative against merit based admission, every university seeks some quality in their newly admitting students moreover on the basis of Board scores only, admission in good institutes is not fair. Some talented students do not have good writing skills, so they don't get good marks in board exams. And because of this only they didn't get admission in a good institute, So I think an entrance is good mechanism for admitting students” stated Anubhavi Singh.
Along somewhat similar lines, Snehil Mishra, opines “Yes, I think CUET UG is a good initiative. But I also think it could have been better planned. I mean, how could one competitive exam discuss your fate. It is sometimes stressful”.
“CUET is for sure a good initiative. It will allow students to have a second chance if they couldn’t perform well in 12th class exams. Many students can get their dream of entering good universities fulfilled. It is definitely an opportunity worth hardworking,” added Kajal Gupta.
“One common exam might seem less stressful, but it is always not the case. It is like students’ one year depends on this particular test” said Tanu Pandey.
To conclude, CUET (UG) - 2023's establishment is an important step towards giving all students in India equitable access to high-quality education at Central Universities. The exam in the near future will work upon streamlining and increasing the transparency of the admissions process.
